This tough, durable broadleaf evergreen is an outstanding evergeen plant. Inkberry provides year round cover for a host of native bird species while providing an excellent food source for these same birds with its black berries. Even better, 'Compacta' is such an easy plant to grow and tolerates just about any landscape situation, especially sandy soils or places prone to exposure to road salt or seaside conditions. Plant it individually or in groups to form a low barrier or screen, thick with small, dark green, lustrous foliage.
Growing Tips for Ilex glabra ''Compacta''
'Compacta' is a female cultivar and needs a male pollinator in order to produce berries. Plants generally do not need pruning as they are usually grown as an informal hedge. If pruning is desired, prune to shape in early spring before new growth begins. Root suckers can be removed if colonial spreading is not desired. Grows well in average to moist soils in full to part sun.
